Everyone has a different area or type of item that tends to get the messiest. For me, it’s always been clothes, and more specifically, the dreaded “not dirty, but was on my body” clothes. These are items that I either tried on, but decided not to wear, or something like jeans or a blazer where I don’t wash them after every wear. In the moment, I’m often too lazy or in too much of a rush to put them back where they belong. So instead they become a heaping pile on my floor or my bed.

Well today, I was walking my dog around the neighborhood when I spotted something on the curb. I am not sure what the original purpose of this contraption was (picture below), but it seemed like the perfect solution to my clothes that were stuck in limbo. This way I can “hang”—read flop—my clothes over it when I’m too lazy to put them away properly. Then on the weekend, when I can muster up enough energy, I can put them away and they won’t have gotten wrinkled or dirty in the process.

If you have the same clothes pile issue as me, you don’t have to wait for someone to trash something to the curb. First, assess how much room you have, preferably in your closet, but if not, then in your room. A lesser used chair can work to drape clothing over until you get a chance to tackle them. Or hooks are a lazy person’s best friend and take up very little space. Command hooks or over the door hooks are great if you rent your place. It feels a lot easier to throw a piece of clothing on a hook rather than fold or put it on a hanger. The goal here is quick and easy, non-wrinkling, and minimal eye sore. Just make sure you actually get around to putting these clothes back in their true homes when your dump spot fills up or once a week- whichever is shorter.

It’s nice being able to see the floor again!

This idea works for other common clutter areas too. You can have dump spots around the house where your clutter gathers so you only need to tackle that one area when you’re tidying up. It helps to make it aesthetically pleasing to you too, like a pretty bowl or basket.
